The Highland Pollen Trap
A new design for harvesting pure pollen.
Collecting pollen from one's own region - many have tried it, but few have stuck with it. The work was too time-consuming, the cleaning effort too high. With the new construction method of the Highland Pollen Trap, it is possible to harvest almost pure pollen. With numerous pictures and in an easy-to-understand style of writing, the author guides us through the pollen-collecting season with lots of informative detailed information.
For the first time in over 30 years, a practical manual on pollen collection is available again.

Targets
No matter who you talk to, collecting pollen is very labour-intensive, mainly due to the time-consuming cleaning process. Most beekeepers who produce pollen in large quantities use a pollen trap that is inserted into the high floor board of the hive. Typically, everything that falls from the colony falls into the collected pollen. This can be considerable amounts, especially after certain steps in the course of colony management.
In order to build up sustainable pollen production and integrate it as easily as possible into the current honey operation, a pollen trap must fulfil the following targets for us:
In order to build up sustainable pollen production and integrate it as easily as possible into the current honey operation, a pollen trap must fulfil the following targets for us:
- Harvesting pollen that is as pure as possible
- Minimal cleaning effort
- Pollen collection without bee contact
- Minimisation of the workload
- Simple activation and deactivation of the pollen trap
- No disturbance of the ongoing bee flight
- Retention of the usual hive management
- Protection from heavy rain
From submerging to cleaning
The construction and functioning of the Highland Pollen Trap are explained. From use in spring and managing the bee colony, to harvesting the pollen, drying and cleaning, all the steps are described in a way that is easy to follow. For the first time, a moisture meter for pollen is also presented.
Informative photos support understanding and facilitate implementation on the apiary.

A custom-made product
The Highland Pollen Trap is designed as an independent floor board under the bee colony.
The Hochland Pollen Trap is a custom-made product, adapted to the super dimensions and to the construction of the supers of the apiary. We have developed it in close cooperation with the Böhmerwaldwerkstatt and continuously optimised it. In the Böhmerwaldwerkstatt, they have experience with custom-made and dimensionally accurate products for beekeeping. The design is very well thought-out and includes small but important details that have emerged from practical experience in the course of development. We can highly recommend the Böhmerwaldwerkstatt for the Highland Pollen Trap. The components pollen grid, stainless steel grid and drone escapes are to be provided.

Influences on the bee colony
The author's experiences with the possible influences on the bee colony's behaviour, which do not correspond at all to the usual views, are interesting. The Highland Pollen Trap opens up a new, far gentler method of pollen collection. This is documented and proven with many photos.
Analyses and nutritional values
In addition, the author deals with analyses of residues, pyrrolizidine alkaloids and the botanical origin of pollen. Valuable - and probably unique in this compactness - is the information on the composition and nutritional values of pollen.
